Puerto Vallarta
Formerly a quaint seaside village, Vallarta has been transformed into a world-famous resort city with 2.5 million visitors annually. Tourism is Vallarta's only industry, and it has made it a bilingual city. The cobblestoned streets, lined with old-fashioned adobe buildings with red tile roofs, make Vallarta one of Mexico's most picturesque coastal cities. Marina Vallarta Marina Vallarta is one of Mexico's most attractive and well-planned marina developments. The 445-acre/180-hectare site comprises slips for 355 boats, and it has 1.5 miles/2.4 kilometres of beach, an 18-hole golf course, a water park and two shopping centres. Luxury hotels line the beachfront, villas and a boutique hotel dot the course, and condominiums and timeshares surround the marina. The well-protected marina is packed from November to May with leisure boats of every description. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront boardwalk (malecon), and see the beautiful sailboats and yachts, many with their owners living on board. Nuevo Vallarta Just 8 miles/13 kilometres north of town, crossing into the neighboring state of Nayarit, is Nuevo Vallarta, a 1,150-acre/405-hectare residential resort development with nearly 3 miles/4.8 kilometres of beachfront, a large marina, several five start hotels, an 18-hole golf course, and more than 5 miles/8 kilometres of river and estuary area for home sites with private docks. Nuevo Vallarta is the site of Quelele Lagoon, one of the most beautiful coastal bodies along the bay. It comprises more than 247 acres/100 hectares of tidal plain surrounded by white mangroves. The lagoon is also the natural habitat of the river crocodile, many varieties of fish, and an amazing range of species of both resident and migratory birds.
