Acapulco

Acapulco stretches around the bay and beyond, and is too spread out to see on foot. A ride in a horse-drawn carriage is a colourful way to view the downtown area and the main boulevard, Costera Miguel Aleman, named after the man who was president when it was built, Miguel Aleman Velasco (1946-1952).

The centre of town is jammed together around a highly adorned main plaza with a brick gazebo, potted palms, benches and fountains. An unusual-looking cathedral with Moorish-style spires that resemble mosque minarets is hidden behind the square's many ornamental features.

Here the resort changes into a tropical port town. The main square more or less faces the dock area, where fishing boats and seafaring freighters dock. Occasionally, you will see brightly-lit luxury cruise liners in the bay. Fisherman's Walk, the seaside promenade, is a lovely place to stroll along the beach or sit on a bench under the shade of a palm tree.

Puerto Marqués:
About 18km southeast of Acapulco, Puerto Marqués is a small cove from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Bahía de Acapulco as the Carretera Escéncia climbs south out of the city. The calm water at Puerto Marqués is good for water-skiing and sailing. Buses regularly run to Puerto Marqués.

Playa Revolcadero:
Southeast past Puerto Marqués and heading out toward the airport, Playa Revolcadero is the long, straight beach of the new Acapulco Diamante luxury resorts. Surf conditions are perfect here, and horseback riding is a popular activity.

Pie de la Cuesta:
About 10km northwest of Acapulco, Pie de la Cuesta is a narrow strip of land bordered by the beach and ocean on one side, and the large, freshwater Laguna de Coyuca on the other. Compared to Acapulco, it's quieter, cleaner, closer to nature and much more peaceful.
